The origins of this diamond shape date back to 1458 when Lodewyk van Berquem experimented with symmetry and the placement of facets. The pear shape is a cross between round brilliants and marquise diamond cuts. With 58 facets, this kind of diamond is almost as brilliant as the round cut but with a more unusual shape. The pear shape is one of only two diamond cuts that are not symmetrical both horizontally and vertically. The elongated design of the pear shape makes it one of the most flattering diamond cuts available as it helps to elongate and slim the finger. This makes it a good choice if you have wider fingers along with other slimming cuts such as the emerald, marquise and oval. It is also common for the pear shape to be less costly than other cuts, such as the brilliant, of the same carat weight as they are less in demand and easier to produce. What should I look for in a pear-shaped engagement ring?

You want to make sure that your diamond is symmetrical and that it has the ideal length to width ratio as this will improve the brilliance.
